Schwerin is located in the northern German state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, around 110 kilometres east of Hamburg.
Schwerin Castle
Schwerin Castle is one of the most important examples of Romantic Historicism in Europe and is located on an island in the main lake of Schwerin. The castle dates back to the 10th century and has undergone many transformations over the years. It currently houses the state parliament of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The throne room with its gilded decorations and magnificent atmosphere is particularly impressive. The castle is surrounded by beautiful gardens and a park, with sculptural landscapes and a variety of native and exotic plants.
Schweriner See
The Schweriner See is the second largest lake in Mecklenburg. It is divided into two roughly equal parts, the northern part called Aussersee and the southern part called Innensee. The southern part is deeper, although there are shallows and boulders. The northern part has more shallows, but it is in this part that the lake is at its deepest. It is an ideal place for walks, bike trips and water sports.
St.-Marien-Dom zu Schwerin – Ev.-Luth. Domgemeinde Schwerin
St.-Marien-Dom zu Schwerin is a church with a famous tower with 219 steps leading to the top, and a viewing terrace offering a panoramic view of the city of Schwerin. The church is visible from various points throughout the city, forming a captivating focal point, inviting exploration from many angles. Inside, the church displays a wealth of artistic design and historical artifacts, making it a treasure trove for architecture enthusiasts and religious people alike.
Staatliches Museum Schwerin (Mecklenburg State Museum)
The State Museum is a museum and art gallery founded in Schwerin by Frederick Francis II, Duke of Mecklenburg in 1882. The museum is renowned for the valuable collection of works it exhibits, including Dutch and Flemish paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as some works from the Middle Ages.
Mecklenburg State Theater
The Mecklenburg State Theatre is a theatre for music, drama and ballet and is also home to one of the oldest orchestras in the world – the Mecklenburg State Orchestra Schwerin, which celebrated its 460th anniversary in 2023. Since merging with the Parchim State Theatre in 2016, it has also become part of the State Theatre and offers theatre productions for children and young people in the Cultural Mill Parchim.
Schelf Church
The Schelf Church of St. Nicholas is an Evangelical Lutheran church dedicated to St. Nicholas in the Schelfstadt district of Schwerin. The church is owned and used by a congregation within the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany. It is a rare beauty – the only pure brick Baroque church in the West Mecklenburg region.
Zoo Schwerin
Schwerin Zoo is home to many rare and endangered species. In natural enclosures, visitors can see endangered species. These include southern white rhinos and giant anteaters, the only representatives of their species in the far north. In the centre of the zoo is a large pond complex, which is not only home to Cuban flamingos and pink pelicans, but is also a place animated by native biodiversity.
