The Meteora is an extraordinary rock formation in Greece, primarily known for two things: its spectacular rock formations and the monasteries perched atop them. These monumental rock formations rise above the Thessalian plain in central Greece, creating one of the most picturesque and remarkable landscapes in the country.
The Meteora Monasteries, also known as the Monasteries of Meteora, comprise a collection of Orthodox monasteries built on the summits of high cliffs. The first monasteries were established here in the 11th century, although most of them were built in the 14th century when monks sought refuge from Turkish invasions.
These monasteries served as places of prayer, meditation, and Orthodox monk life. Their construction was extremely challenging and required immense effort from the monastic communities, often climbing dangerous rock paths to deliver building materials to the cliff summits. Many of these monasteries were originally built as defensive fortresses before being converted into monasteries.

It’s quite a challenge to reach this hilly corner, as there are 192 stone steps leading to its summit. Perched atop a tall rock, the Great Meteoron monastery resembles a monumental fortress towering above the surrounding landscape. Its location on a high cliff not only adds to its distinctive appearance but also makes it one of the most spectacular places in Meteora.
