Kohtla-Järve is a small town 50 km west of Narva. During the Soviet period, the fourth and currently fifth largest city in Estonia. Russian-speaking population approximately 80%. The city lies in the heart of the oil shale mining area, making it one of Estonia’s most powerful industrial centers. Due to the extraction and processing of slate for the needs of the chemical industry (the seat of the relevant research institute), other industries have also developed, including metal, construction materials, wood (furniture), clothing and food. The existence of Kohtla-Järve on the map of the country is most closely related.

The mining park located in the Kohtla-Nõmme commune is transformed into a modern visitor center that presents the field of oil shale mining and energy in an interactive form, telling visitors the story of the history of oil shale energy in Estonia, starting from the geological formation and the extraction of mineral resources to the final electricity users and future prospects for oil shale deposits. Do you want to taste real mining life? Then all that’s left to do is put on your rubber boots, put on your down jacket and grab your lamp. It is underground that you can see, hear, taste and feel what people who have been working hard underground every day for several dozen years do.
Museum of Oil Shale
The permanent exhibition at this museum in Kohtla-Järve shows how oil shale forms, how it is discovered and the history of its use. It also explains how it is produced and recycled. You can also see an exhibition of 80 works titled ‘The oil shale industry in art’.
