Sillamäe, a town in northeastern Estonia in the East Virumaa Province, is located on the southern coast of the Gulf of Finland, not far from the border with Russia. It has a population of just under 17,000 (2004), of which over 80% are Russians and only about 4% Estonians. Twenty years later (January 1, 2025), the population had dropped by almost a third, to 12,153.
*During the Soviet era in Estonia, Sillamäe was a closed town, primarily due to its chemical plant, which produced fuel rods and nuclear materials for Soviet nuclear power plants and nuclear weapons. However, the company operating the line, Narva Line, abandoned the project. Sillamäe railway station is located nearby.
