It features high rock walls through which a rushing stream flows, creating waterfalls and cascades. The gorge is accessible to visitors via wooden walkways that lead through the picturesque surroundings.
Located in the Zell am See-Kaprun region in the state of Salzburg, this gorge is a popular destination for tourists visiting the surrounding mountains and lakes. How was the Sigmund Thun Klamm gorge formed? It was shaped by the activity of a glacier, which in prehistoric times moved through the mountain valleys. During the glacier’s erosion process, the Kapruner glacier carved its bed into the rocks in the area of today’s gorge.
What awaits us when exploring the gorge? Along the trail, you can encounter wooden bridges and observation platforms that offer excellent vantage points from which to admire waterfalls, cascades, and other interesting rock formations in the gorge. Additionally, the trail leads through areas with lush vegetation, adding charm to this extraordinary place.
Passing through the gorge and returning via the forest path typically takes about 1.5 hours, but of course, it all depends on your pace. Hiking through the rocky gorge is safe, but caution is advised as the rocks may be slippery from the flowing water. It’s also important to remember to wear appropriate footwear – preferably shoes with a sturdy sole to provide good grip on rocky terrain. Safety and comfort during the hike are a priority, so it’s worth preparing adequately before embarking on the adventure in the gorge.
SEISENBERG – the most beautiful ravines in Austria
The Seisenberg Gorge, also known as Raggaschlucht, is located in Carinthia, near the town of Mallnitz. Its most characteristic feature is the high, steep rock walls, between which flows a rushing stream, creating picturesque waterfalls, cascades, and pools. During a walk through the gorge, you can admire these impressive rock formations and experience the force of nature that has shaped this extraordinary landscape over centuries.
The Seisenberg Gorge in Austria has a long history dating back thousands of years. The exact date of the gorge’s formation is unknown, but it is believed to have begun shaping thousands of years ago during the Ice Age when glaciers crushed and displaced vast amounts of rocks and soil.
In 1831, a group of loggers constructed a path approximately 600 meters long into the depths of the gorge. Thanks to them, this path is also accessible to visitors. Crossing it takes less than an hour.
You can reach the Seisenberg Gorge by hiking trails leading from nearby towns. Another option is to use public or private transportation, leaving your vehicle at a nearby parking lot and continuing on foot.
