Wels is a city famous not only for its wonderful National Park which picturesquely presents the Alps, but also for its historical monuments which, over the course of history, have left behind several interesting historic buildings. The most interesting of them include: built at the turn of the 12th and 14th centuries, the parish church of St. John the Baptist (Stadtpfarrkirche), the imperial castle (Burg Wels) expanded in the 16th century by Maximilian I, the former monastery of the Friars Minor (now an archaeological museum), the neo-Gothic Evangelical church built in 1849-1852, the late Gothic town hall building, the Lichtenegg water castle (Wasserschloss Lichtenegg ), the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Herz-Jesu-Kirche) and the remains of the city walls. There is also a Welldorado water park in Wels.

Location
Wels is a city in north Austria. It lies along the Traun River at the foot of the Eastern Alps, southwest of Linz. This place has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Wels was originally the Roman Ovilava, the capital of the province of Noricum.
Limestone Alps National Park


The Kalkalpen National Park (Limestone Alps National Park) protects Austria’s largest forest wilderness in the highly karstified Sengsen and rugged Reichraminger Hintergebirge mountains. Alongside hidden gorges and untouched mountain streams, the green splendour is allowed to be what it always used to be: a silent and yet multi-voiced miracle of nature, which provides a habitat for even the rarest of species. Welser Tiergarten

The Welser Tiergarten, located in the city of Wels, has the distinction of being the oldest zoo in Upper Austria. This combination park and zoo offers a unique combination of natural beauty and wildlife, making it a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. Home for 650 animals The Welser Tiergarten covers an area of 28,000 m² and is home to 650 animals. Inhabiting various zones, including forest, water and desert.
Museum Angerlehner


The Angerlehner Museum in Thalheim near Wels is a museum of contemporary art. Its heart is the Schaudepot, which houses the private art collection of KR Heinz J. Angerlehner, which has developed over more than 40 years of keen passion for contemporary art. Its extensive collection focuses on paintings from 1950 onwards, supplemented by drawings, photographs and sculptures. The museum simultaneously presents four different exhibitions, which change several times a year.
Ledererturm

Ledererturm at the left end of the square The city hall is the landmark of today’s Wels and the last remaining tower of the former city fortifications. The name comes from the Lederers (tanners) who settled nearby. The current shape dates back to the early 17th century.
Schloß Pollheim Castle

The castle was part of the medieval city fortifications. It encompasses all styles from Romanticism to Gothic and Renaissance. At the north entrance, a memorial plaque commemorates the work of the famous Nuremberg master singer Hans Sachs in Wels. Polheim Castle was probably built under Albero von Polheim around the middle of the 13th century.
Stadtmuseum Burg Wels


Wels City Museum / Wels Castle: The former Wels Castle was once the center of a large complex of agricultural estates. Today it houses one of the most interesting city museums. For four centuries, the castle was owned by the Habsburgs. Today, the castle houses collections of the city’s history, the Imperial Panorama of Wels and the Museum of Expellees.

House of Salome Alt



Haus der Salome Alt is the most beautiful old building in the center of Wels. The house has an interesting late Gothic corner bay from the middle of the 16th century. with richly decorated architectural parts.
