Lommel is a town in Belgium, in the Flemish Region, in the province of Limburg, in the Maaseik district. On January 1, 2024, it had a population of 34,913. It lies on the border with the Netherlands. Lommel is home to a Polish military cemetery with the graves of 253 soldiers who died during combat in 1944. In 1946, at the initiative of the British authorities, the bodies of soldiers who died in various parts of Belgium and the Netherlands were transferred here. Soldiers of General Stanisław Maczek’s 1st Armored Division and Polish airmen who died fighting for the liberation of Belgium are buried here. It is the largest Polish cemetery in Belgium. It is also home to the largest German World War II cemetery located outside Germany. 39,111 soldiers are buried there.
