Čakovec Castle

Čakovec Castle (or Zrinski Castle) is a castle in Čakovec. The castle is located in Zrinski Park, not far from the city’s central square. It was built in the 13th century by Count Dimitrius Csáky. The castle is the biggest fortification in Međimurje County. The castle’s main palace is now the site of the Međimurje Museum, the biggest museum in the county, and its atrium is also used as an outdoor theatre during the summer months.

The Međimurje County Museum in Čakovec is located in the Zrinski Castle inner palace, the biggest medieval fortification in the county, close to the centre of the town and its main square.

The Museum collects, preserves, maintains, displays, exhibits and interprets artifacts pertinent to the history of Međimurje County. It also gives expert help, guiding services and other informational services, organizes educational lectures and specialized exhibitions, publishes expert books and has other activities.

Riznica Međimurja – Treasury of Međimurje

The Museum of Intangible Heritage “Treasure of Međimurje Čakovec” is located in the Zrinski fortifications in Čakovec. Since 1954, the Museum of Međimurje Čakovec has been operating in the Old Town. The classic permanent exhibition of the local museum is located inside the central palace.

It is a multimedia museum dedicated to the culture carried by people, their hands, skills, knowledge and craftsmanship, and oral heritage. The museum’s exhibition itself is divided into two floors, on the first floor there are “Miniatures”, an exhibition about the rich intangible heritage of Međimurje: Međimurje folk songs, a long tradition of goldsmithing and gingerbread making, the carnival mask Pikač or the legend of Pozoj, the dragon who sleeps under the Old Town.

Zrinski Park

Zrinski Park is an interesting site to visit in Cakovec in the northern part of Croatia. The park is bountiful in its collection of monuments, memorials and sculptures that are relevant to the traditional and historical heritage of the city, like the statue to Saint Jerome and Nikolai Zrinski. The casino was built in 1903 with the capital of the merchants in the Hungarian Secession style and served as a meeting place for the townspeople—a new social class in Međimurje at the time. In addition to a room for card games and other parlor games, the building featured a separate room for ladies, a reading room, and a ballroom. For two decades, between 1966 and 1986, part of this building was used as a library and reading room. Since the end of World War II, this building has served as the headquarters of the trade unions.

The Međimurje Tourism Palace in Čakovec houses the Međimurje Ecomuseum Visitor Center. The Center features a multimedia display that introduces visitors to the attractive contents of the fourteen original sites that make up the Ecomuseum in an interactive and entertaining way. The Ecomuseum Visitor Center is open every day of the week with prior notice, and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. without notice.
