Kladno is a city with a rich mining history. Mayrau Mining Museum
In the village of Vinařice near Kladno, the Mayrau Mining Museum recalls the history of coal mining in the Kladno region. The museum offers a unique and accessible experience within the confines of the former mine.
Inaugurated in October 1877 and named after Kajetán Mayer, the Mayrau Mine operated for 120 years, extracting 34 million tons of coal. Despite the decline of mining, the open-air museum preserves its legacy. “Ocelový pomeranč” sculpture
In 1991, Viktor Stříbrný, created a stainless-steel, spherical sculpture with a fibrous-looking sliver of metal gently dropping from its core. While the sculpture is officially known as “Plastika s kosmologickou a kosmogonickou tématikou – Vesmír II,” or “sculpture with cosmological and cosmogonical themes – Universe II” in Czech,
locals more often refer to it by one of its many nicknames, including “ocelová koule” (steel ball), “kladenská koule” (kladno ball), “ocelový pomeranč” (steel orange), or simply “pomeranč” (orange). It’s two meters high, two meters long, two meters wide, and extends two meters beneath the ground.
Socha Rudoarmějce (Statue of a Red Army Soldier)
Monument to Red Army Soldier also known as “Pomník osvobození Rudou armádou” is built in 1949 to commemorate the liberation of Czechoslovakia by the Soviet Army at the end of the Second World War.
The 2.8-meter (9 foot) tall figural statue of a Red Army soldier stands on a high granite pedestal and is flanked on both sides by granite blocks, five on the left and one on the right.
Abstraktní plastika
The bronze sculpture “Abstraktní Plastika” (“Abstract Sculpture”) was installed in 1973 in the Sítná housing estate. The work was created by Czech sculptor Miloš Zet (1920–1995), who was known mainly for his massive monuments and realistic statues, although this one is pure abstraction.
Kladenský zámek (Kladno Castle)
The Baroque castle is the most important monument in the town of Kladno. The castle is a three-story building with a U-shaped ground plan, with a turret in the middle of the middle wing and blind arcades in the courtyard. The entrance to the castle chapel of St. Lawrence and its interior are decorated with frescoes from 1740. The castle is adjacent to the Medvědárium.
The castle is surrounded by a pleasant garden, which is open all year round and combines relaxation and cultural activities with the historical context of the original garden. The stone ball with flowing water is a reminder of a former well, and the sanctuary comes from the original Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
Sládeček history museum in Kladno
The museum is housed in the former director’s villa Poldi steelworks in Kladno near the former premises of the ironworks. You can visit the exhibition dedicated to the history of Kladno from prehistory Baroque to the 19th century. There are also short, thematically diverse exhibitions and lectures zone.
Kladno City Theater
Famous City Theater Kladno is one of the oldest repertory theaters in the Czech Republic. Its repertoire consists of both classical and contemporary plays, the program is also complemented by various accompanying events and educational activities.
The Kladno City Theater was opened in 1912 and is located on Divadelní Street in the city center.
Muzeum věžáků Kladno (Kladno High-rise Building Museum)
The Museum of Tower Construction in Kladno offers a unique exhibition of Josef Havlíček’s housing estate, focusing on the high-rise buildings in Kladno, urban planning in the 1950s and the lives of the residents of the tower buildings at that time.
The museum is located in the first of six tower blocks and is still inhabited by several residents who moved there right after their completion. Visitors can literally explore the house from the basement to the roof – they can see the restored entrance hall, a modern exhibition in the basement, a civil defense bunker, a model apartment and a roof terrace with a view.
