Full description:

Your guided tour of Molfetta will begin with the symbol of the city, the Cathedral of San Corrado, which is dedicated to the patron saint of the city. Built near the port in the 12th century, it is a typical Romanesque building with the particularity of having been built with 3 domes in axis, and with two bell towers clearly visible even from several kilometers away.

The tour will then continue through the historic center with a visit to the 17th-century Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. It became a cathedral in 1785, as the Cathedral of San Corrado had become inadequate for the needs of worship of the increased population. Inside are preserved the remains of the patron saint Corrado of Bavaria.
The interior of the church has a Latin cross plan, with a barrel vault frescoed in 1887 by the Molfolini painter Michele Romano. A short distance through the alleys of the historic center, you reach the Passari tower, initially a gunboat then became a watchtower.

What else is worth visiting?

Molfetta Lighthouse

The Molfetta Lighthouse is an active lighthouse located on the bend of the eastern pier of the port of Molfetta on the Adriatic Sea. The beacon, painted metallic gray, is placed 22 meters (72 ft) above sea level and emits one white flash that turns on and off in 6 seconds, visible from a distance of 16 nautical miles (30 km; 18 mi).

Cathedral of San Corrado

The church, built on the edge of the old town to house the remains of Saint Conrad, who died in Puglia in 1154, stands close to the spectacular quay, as a landmark for people reaching Puglia from the sea. It is not clear when it was exactly erected, probably at the end of the 12th century.

Torre Calderina

Torre Calderina near Cala San Giacomo, an ancient city landing place, already active in the Middle Ages. It presents the typical typology of viceregal watchtowers with a quadrangular plan and a truncated-pyramidal structure. It has three machicolations per wall and no openings on the sea side. Today the external stone staircase replaces the ancient removable staircase that allowed access to the habitable room of the tower.

Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta

The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta was built in the seventeenth century at the behest of the Jesuits and is dedicated to their founder Ignatius of Loyola. Inside it are kept the relics of the patron saint St. Conrad of Bavaria. The façade houses inside a window the statue depicting Saint Ignatius of Loyola, but there are also other works, such as the Sixteenth Century Mariae Dormitio and the canvas of the Assumption of Mary of Corrado Giaquinto.

Palazzo Giovene – Young Palace

Sixteenth-century noble palace, now the seat of the municipal administration, located in Piazza Municipio, on the corner of Via Morte. Built by the “de Luca” family, it then passed to the “Esperti” family who sold it to the “Giovene” family in 1772. In the 19th century it was equipped with a third floor above ground which was one of the main causes of the structural instability which made it unusable for much of the 20th century.

Captivating sunsets, fantastic views, iridescent colors. Discovering Puglia along the eight hundred kilometers of coastline from the Adriatic to the Ionian Sea is a source of an incredible, magical experience.
