Location

Rumpenheim Castle 

Rumpenheim Castle (also known as Offenbach Castle) is located on the banks of the Main River in Rumpenheim (near Offenbach). Rumpenheim Castle is a small, three-winged building with a long history, situated in an idyllic castle park and is often visited by walkers who admire the castle. There is a ferry across the Main nearby.


The castle currently standing on the site was built in the 17th century, but its roots go all the way back to the 14th century. It was built in the Baroque style as the summer residence of the Prince of Hesse-Homburg.

Around 1775/80, the Bernard and d’Orville families, owners of the snuff factory founded in 1733, had a new residential and commercial building built: today’s Büsing Palace.


In addition to the palace-like main building with its large garden, storage rooms and part of the manufacturing operations were located to the side of the large courtyard, with other factory buildings nearby. The building experienced its heyday at the end of the 18th century.

German Leather Museum

The German Leather Museum was opened in 1917 and moved into its present premises, a warehouse in the classical style on the western side of the town, in 1939.

It now combines three museums, the Shoe Museum, whose collections include examples of footwear from all over the world, the Museum of Applied Art which demonstrates how leather has been used over the centuries by craftsmen and designers, and the Ethnological Museum, which concentrates on the use of leather Africa, America and Asia. The shape and color scheme of the tower are inspired by physical measuring instruments. The observation platform, measuring 8.5 square meters, is almost 10 meters high.

Alter Friedhof

The Old Cemetery, covering around 28 hectares, is now a landscape and garden monument. It was one of the first park cemeteries in northern Germany. The diverse vegetation combined with the historic chapels in different architectural styles and graves characterize the character of the Old Cemetery.

The cemetery paths and seating areas invite you to stop for a while. Famous representatives of Schorndorf, including Prime Minister Dr. Reinhold Maier and the painter Ina Krämer, found their final resting place here.
