The regional Balkan cuisine, characteristic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is based on eastern and western influences. The dishes resemble Turkish, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisines, but thanks to the years of Austrian rule, there are also Central European influences.

Typical Ingredients
Typical ingredients include tomatoes, potatoes, onions, garlic, peppers, cucumbers, carrots, mushrooms, spinach, zucchini, fresh and dried beans, plums, milk, paprika (dried as a spice), pavlaka cream and kajmak. Typical meats are beef and lamb.

Ćevapi – Meatballs

This dish is one of the most popular in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It consists of small minced meat sausages that are grilled and served with onion, ajvar and lepin.
Burek

A traditional pie filled with meat, cheese or vegetables is a favorite dish of Bosnians. It can be found on every street corner and is the perfect solution for a quick meal.
Sogan Dolma

Boiled onion stuffed with meat and rice, served in its own sauce.

Begova čorba

It is a beef stew with vegetables and spices, served with homemade dumplings. The dish is also very filling and tasty.
Sarma

These are cabbage rolls stuffed with meat, rice and spices, cooked in tomato sauce, the dish is spicy. This is one of the traditional dishes of Bosnian cuisine.

Mantije – Mantles

Mantije, balls of hand-stretched dough stuffed with seasoned beef and baked until golden brown. Served with yogurt.
Bosanski lonac

A goulash made of meat, peppers, cabbage and potatoes cooked over low heat in a clay pot for a long time. Bosanski lonac is the flagship dish of Bosnian cuisine.

Baklava

This is a sweet, multi-layered cake with nuts, honey and filoh dough. This is a dessert that you must try when in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Baklava is also popular in Greek, Turkish and Bulgarian cuisine.
Coffee

Bosnian coffee have preparation technique and drinking rituals. In Bosnia, it is prepared from roasted coffee beans that are finely ground, sometimes using an old-fashioned device resembling a large mortar and pestle. It is prepared in a pot on a small tray with a glass of water and something sweet.

Rakija

Rakija is an alcohol very popular in the Balkans, e.g. in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbia. Very often it is produced at home and sold at fairs or given to tourists by their hosts. Rakija is a strong alcoholic drink similar to brandy or moonshine. The alcohol content is 40%-50%, but in home production it is usually higher.
