Kardzhali (Bulgarian: Кърджали) is a city in southeastern Bulgaria, the administrative center of Kardzhali Oblast, in the eastern Rhodope Mountains, on the Arda River (a tributary of the Maritsa). Approximately 50,800 inhabitants. Zinc and lead smelting, food industry (primarily tobacco); in the surrounding area, on the Arda River, are large dams and hydroelectric power plants: to the east of the city is the Studen Kladenets reservoir, to the west – the Kardzhali reservoir.
