Pleven is a town in northern Bulgaria. It lies a few kilometers east of the Vit River, a tributary of the Danube, in the majestic Rila Mountains.

Pleven became famous mainly for his active participation in the Russian-Turkish war in 1877-1878. The city was besieged for five months and was surrounded by terrible battles between Russia and Turkey.

On December 10, 1877, the war ended in victory, the Russian army managed to defeat and conquer the army of Osman Pasha, and this day was announced as the official Pleven Day.

Pleven Epopee 1877, more commonly known as Pleven Panorama, is a panorama depicting the events of the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–78, in particular the five-month siege of Plevna (Pleven Epopee), which saw the city contribute to the liberation of Bulgaria after five centuries of Ottoman rule.

The panorama was created by 13 Russian and Bulgarian artists and was built to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Pleven epic and was officially unveiled on December 10, 1977.

The museum’s permanent exposition of 5,000 items is situated in a total of 24 halls and is divided in 5 departments, devoted to archaeology, ethnography, the Bulgarian National Revival and the Ottoman rule of Bulgaria, modern history, and nature.

Kaylaka Park

Just 6 km south of Pleven is Kaylaka Park. You can peacefully go for a walk here admiring the vegetation or enjoy sports and entertainment. Vertical cliffs over 20 meters high are suitable for rock climbing.

There are also remains of the Roman road Storgoziya. There are swimming pools, a playground, tennis courts, a lake with boats and water wheels, and a food stand.

Nature lovers can visit the “Chernelka” nature reserve, located about 12 km from Pleven.

Chapel and Mausoleum of Saint George the Trophy-Bearer, Pleven

Orthodox chapel and mausoleum of St. The George Trophy Bearer is one of the city’s most important monuments. It was built in memory of hundreds of Russian and Romanian soldiers who died during the siege of Pleven in 1878.
