Šumava – the largest national park in the Czech Republic

The Šumava Mountains lie on the border of the Czech Republic, Austria and Germany. A significant part of the area is the Šumava National Park, where you can find numerous beautiful forests and meadows, picturesque valleys and glacial lakes, such as Czarne and Diabelskie. The beauty of Šumava can be discovered on hundreds of kilometers of hiking trails and navigable rivers. Among this beautiful scenery there are also many castles and palaces, rope parks, water parks, museums, ski areas and groomed cross-country ski trails.

Location

Šumava (Czech: Šumava) is a mountain range located on the border of the Czech Republic, Germany and Austria. The highest peak is Großer Arber located on the German side.

What’s worth seeing ?

There are many interesting tourist attractions in the park that attract tourists. A charming place is definitely Lake Lipno, which is located on the Vltava River. The Wetłava is the longest river in the Czech Republic. One of the main attractions are glacial lakes, and it is mainly worth seeing Black Lake (Černé jezioro). Black Lake is the largest and deepest natural lake in the Czech Republic. Another interesting attraction in Šumava National Park is Lake Laka with a viewing terrace and Plešné jezero. And in the vicinity of Modrava, Hradlový bridge – Rechle. You can also find smaller and larger waterfalls in the park. One of them is the Bílá strž waterfall. It is worth going to the town of Vimperk because there is a castle to see there.

Ski resorts:

  • Špičák – Železná Ruda A ski region in Western Bohemia located near the border with Germany. It offers the best sports conditions in the Czech Šumava region. Perfect, well-maintained downhill slopes, snow parks for snowboard enthusiasts and picturesque cross-country skiing routes. In addition to excellent slopes and sports opportunities, the region offers numerous entertainment options.

  • Zadov – A popular winter and summer recreation center in the southern part of Šumava and one of the largest winter resorts in Šumava. It is located 15 km from Vimperk, on the border of the Šumava National Park. Due to the small variation in altitude and the slopes of easy and medium difficulty, the area is very popular as a place for family recreation. The ideal, undemanding terrain attracts cross-country skiing enthusiasts.

  • Nové Hutě – One of the smaller classic and downhill skiing centers in the Šumava region, located near the more famous centers such as Zadov and Churáňov (4 km) at an altitude of 1,030 m above sea level. The area is dominated by the peak of Přilba, 1,217 m above sea level. The combination of the cross-country trail with the šumava loop is not too demanding. Families with small children, but also for organizing skiing and sports courses.
  • Lipno – The Lipno ski complex, the only five-star resort in the South Bohemian region, is the best ski resort in the Czech Republic. Guests can expect perfectly prepared, safe and snow-filled slopes with a length of 8.3 km, well-equipped training areas with moving sidewalks, three four-seater trains, a skicross railway and a snow park.
