Lyon – Holidays, Attractions, Active Entertainment, Interesting Fact

Do you associate France only with Paris? There are many charming towns worth seeing here! One of them is definitely Lyon. It is an ideal place for sightseeing enthusiasts.

Location: A city in east-central France. The Lyon region is located in the Rhône department, in the Rhône Alps region. The city is located between the two rivers Rhône and Saône. Please remember that the Lyon region is not the same as the Lyon province. The Lyon region includes the departments of the Loire, the Rhône, the south of the Saône-Loire, the west of Ain, the north of Isere, the Drôme and the Ardèche. Lyon is the third largest city in France – after Paris and Marseille.

Musée des beaux-arts de Lyon – Museum of Fine Arts. The museum is one of the largest not only in France but also in all of Europe. It houses collections ranging from ancient Egyptian monuments to exhibits dating back to the 20th century.

Place Bellecour – The square is the central point in the city center and is home to one of the largest metro stations, Bellecour, which connects Lines A and D. The main shopping streets such as Rue de la République and Rue Victor Hugo also branch from here. There is also a Ferris wheel here.

Old Town Lyon, or Vieux Lyon as it is affectionately called by its residents, is designated an UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the best-preserved examples of Roman, Medieval and Renaissance architecture in Europe.

The Odeon in Lyon is a small ancient Roman theater located near the top of Fourvière Hill in Lyon. It is paired with the Ancient Theater of Fourvière.

Time for active people: If you like sports and an active lifestyle, it is an ideal place for hiking and cycling. Lakes and rivers encourage practicing various water sports and fishing. There are also various pitches, sports halls, gyms and ice rinks in the region. By going horse riding, you will get to know the local nature. Those interested can explore regional parks on the back of a donkey. Parachute jumps and balloon or paragliding flights will provide a lot of excitement and beautiful views. Thrill seekers can bungee jump from a high bridge or go via ferrata. In winter, you can go downhill skiing, cross-country skiing or snowshoe hiking. There are also golf courses in the region. You can relax here in various wellness and spa centers. It is also worth going on a boat trip.

Staying on the topic of sports: It is impossible to miss Football Stadium. Parc Olympique Lyonnais, or rather Groupama Stadium, is a French stadium located in the city of Décines-Charpieu, on the outskirts of Lyon. Olympique Lyon plays its matches here. The stadium’s capacity is 59,186 seats.

Interesting Fact: Lyon has as many as 4,000 restaurants. Starting with those with top chefs Paul Bocuse and George Blanca, two of the best chefs in the world. Their restaurants have 3 Michelin stars. Obviously, this equates to spending about 40 Euro for an appetizer. I invite those looking for unusual culinary delicacies. However, if we like going to markets with fresh products, local residents recommend two markets: Marché Saint-Antoine and Marché de la Croix-Rousse. And the third Marché Salengro – the most international, where you can find ecological products from all over the world.

Is it worth choosing this place for a holiday? What type of sightseeing do you choose: quiet or active?
