Melissani Cave

Fascinating Melissani Lake is one of the most beautiful sites in Kefalonia, situated in a cave. Part of the cave’s roof collapsed a few thousand years ago due to an earthquake. The daylight falls through this opening, showing the colour of the lake in its deep blue.

As soon as the sun stands high above the lake, the sunrays lighten up the crystal clear water to an unreal bright turquoise. So the best time to visit Melissani is around noon. The water is so clear that you can see the ground even at its highest depth of 30 metres but keep an eye out for eels in the lake.

Drogarati Cave

The Drogarati Cave in Kefalonia was discovered 300 years ago when a strong earthquake caused a collapse that revealed the cave’s entrance. Drogarati is an impressive cave with remarkable formations of stalactites and stalagmites. The cave is about 60m deep and has a constant temperature of 18ΊC. The humidity of the cave reaches 90%.

De Bosset Bridge and Caretta turtles

De Bosset Bridge is the largest stone bridge on sea water and has been in existence since 1813, walk along it and see wonderful views. This architectural marvel is not only a monument, but also a main attraction for visitors.

Near the bridge you can spot Loggerhead sea turtles (also known as Caretta-caretta) are the only sea turtles that nest in Greece and on Mediterranean. They can be distinguished from other turtles by their large heads, reddish-brown shells and yellow-brown skin, and are considered one of the oldest species in the world. There are quite a few beaches on the island of Kefalonia where you can find both loggerheads and nesting sites. The island is one of the northernmost sea turtle nesting sites in the world.

The main breeding sites are located below Ratzakli in the Bay of Mounda, between Skala and Katelios, while many others are distributed on the beaches of the island, such as Megali Ammos and Ammes in Mines, Makris Gialos in Lassi or Mega Lakos in Lixouri.

Castle of Saint George

The castle is on a hill 7 km from Argostoli and dominates the south part of island of Cephalonia and the bay of Argostoli. Due to the excellent strategic location of the Castle, within a perimeter of 600 meters from the walls, ramparts and watchtowers, on a clear day they could locate pirate ships up to a distance of 20 miles. Argostoli

Sami

Similar to its neighbor-town Argostoli, Lixouri gathers a great number of tourists from the beginning of the summer season. Town offer restaurants and bars and modern bars are filled with young crowds. Beautiful beaches of Lepeda, Xi and Megas Lakos attract lovers of summer recreation. The area organizes many local festivals.
