Ancient Theatre of Larissa
The first ancient theater of Larissa is located in the middle of the city and is mostly constructed out of marble. It consists of three major parts: the cavea, the orchestra, and the stage. The theater was built around the first half of the 3rd century BC by the citizens of the city, under the rule of Antigonus II Gonatas of Macedonia.
The site was originally used for traditional dramatic performances, and also served as a makeshift agora for important city meetings. The theater was renovated during the 1st century BC under Roman influence, and turned into a Roman arena that was used for a variety of different activities, including celebrations, duels, and even animal fights.
Bedesten of Larissa
The bedesten is Located on the top of Frourio hill, the ancient acropolis of the city, this historic building holds stories of trade and urban life from centuries ago.
Second Acient Theathe
The Second Ancient Theatre is located at the junction of Labour Day and Major Velissariou streets west of A ‘Ancient Theatre.The scene is tripartite, with a preserved stone foundation reaching the height of 0.60 m. The scene’s upper part would have been constructed by brick and its roof by wood. Behind it there is the scene’s precinct, disclosed in length of 50,50 m. The theater’s western passage has a length of 9 m., while its east passage is partly excavated, as most of it, is located under a modern street of the city.
Basilica of St. Achillios
The Basilica of St. Achilleios is an early Byzantine basilica on the acropolis of Larissa, dedicated to the city’s patron saint, St. Achilleios. The church was discovered and excavated in 1978, during works on the local free-air market.
Diachronic Museum of Larissa
A new archaeological museum was established in Thessalyat the end of 2015, a museum discernible among the others, due to its diachronic presentation. All periods of culture are included, from Paleolithic to Modern Times, through a variety of finds coming from excavation or handed over by individuals.
Metropolitan Church of Agios Achillios
The Church of Agios Achillios is the metropolitan church of the city of Larissa, dedicated to Agios Achillios, whose memory is celebrated on May 15 and is the patron saint of the city! Built in the 1960s on a fortress hill overlooking the Pinios River and a bridge connecting two areas of Larissa! It is worth visiting not only as a pilgrimage, but also as a tourist attraction!
