Miskolc: Thermal baths, caves and monuments

Miskolc is a wonderful Hungarian city rich in history with many tourist attractions. Although Miskolc is the third largest city in Hungary, you will find beautiful nature around it and you will be able to bathe in the healthful thermal waters. The wonderful caves are also worth visiting.

Beech Mountains (Bükk Mountains)

In the north-east of Hungary, you can find the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains, which are known as the North Hungarian Mountains. Nature lovers and hikers can discover exciting landscapes here, such as the Bükk Mountains and the Bükk National Park of the same name. Bükk means as much as beech and it is precisely these trees that can be found in the national park. It is the largest forest-covered national park in Hungary and the lungs of the country. In addition, well-marked hiking trails guarantee an unforgettable hiking experience in the forests and on the highest peaks in Hungary.

Lillafüred

Lillafüred: This wonderful mountain resort looks like something out of a fairy tale. The roads leading between hills and lush vegetation are especially impressive in autumn, when the leaves shimmer with many colors and their reflection can be admired in the surface of Lake Hámori.

  • Historic narrow-gauge railway

The historic narrow-gauge railway, whose construction dates back to the end of World War I, reaches the Lillafüred district. The route, over 30 kilometers long, leads through tunnels, the valley of the Szinva and Garadna streams and the forest.

  • Anna Cave

Anna Barlang (Anna Cave) is located in Lillafüred, in a park with a waterfall. It is a small tufa cave, a primary cave which was formed by the deposition of the tufa from limestone rich water.

  • Szeleta Cave

Szeleta Cave, located near Lillafüred, is one of the best protected caves in Hungary and one of the first cave excavations in the country. Its name also comes from the prehistoric culture of Szeleta. Due to its location, it has a special layout. At the top there is an observation point with unparalleled views of both the Szinva Valley and Lake Hamor. At the wide entrance to the cave there is a commemorative plaque dedicated to the famous Hungarian scientist Ottó Herman.

  • Saint Stephen’s Cave

The Saint Stephen cave is a specially protected area at Lillafüred. Its entrance is 500 m from the Palace Hotel, next to the Eger-Miskolc road. Stalactite Saint Stephen’s Cave will become a real find for connoisseurs of natural attractions.

The main attraction to visit Miskolc, Hungary, are the unique baths in the Miskolc Tapolca cave. The 3.6 ha area is open all year round and has several swimming and recreational pools.

Miskolc Zoo

  • Avas Church Miskolc

The Gothic Protestant church of Avas is the oldest structure in the center of the city of Miskolc in northern Hungary. It was built in the 13th century as a small Romanesque-style church and later expanded into a larger Gothic-style church.
