Genoa is a beautiful city in the north-west of Italy on the Mediterranean Sea at the foot of the Ligurian Apennine and the Ligurian Alps. Genoa is the capital and main city of the Liguria region. The port of Genoa is the largest seaport in Italy.
The heart of the old town is, of course, the Centro Storico, where you can see traces of Genoa’s history. It is worth strolling through the picturesque and exciting medieval alleys and narrow streets located between the walls.
This maze of small streets, interspersed with tall and tightly closed houses, gives visitors the opportunity to lose themselves in a historical journey. The city center has been inscribed on the World Heritage List.
Cathedral of San Lorenzo, Genoa
Another very important symbol of the city is the Cathedral of San Lorenzo (Cathedral of St. Lawrence). Inside the church we will see the wealth and splendor of the city. You must visit this place – it is absolutely the main point on the list of attractions to visit.
Piazza De Ferrari, Genoa
The Piazza de Ferrari it is a square in the city center. Residents meet at political demonstrations and sports celebrations. But the square is also a meeting place for both residents and tourists. You can find medieval and modern parts of the city here.
Aquarium in Genoa
I recommend going with the whole family to the Aquarium in Genoa. It is the largest aquarium in Europe, rich in diversity of sea creatures. In the aquarium tanks you can find about 12,000 specimens of 600 species from all the seas of the world. Here we will see dolphins, penguins and turtles, as well as popular or rare species of marine mammals.
Biosphere
The Biosphere is located next to the aquarium, in the port. Commonly known as – Renzo Piano Bubble. A steel and glass structure with a tropical forest inside a dome. There we will find vegetation, birds and a small number of mammals.
Galata Museo del Mare, Genoa
The Galata Museum is the largest and most innovative maritime museum in the Mediterranean. There you will find rooms decorated with sailing equipment and atmospheric, sea paintings.
Here we will learn about part of Genoa’s maritime history. We will see a model of the ship, armor, and cannons. Outside, in front of the museum, the Nazario Sauro Ship is moored, ready for tourists to explore. Among the unique exhibits we can look for letters written by Christopher Columbus.
Genoa Lighthouse
Another symbol of the city is the Genoa Lighthouse, 77 m high, the highest in the Mediterranean and the second highest in Europe. The lighthouse stands on a 40-meter high rock. At the top of the first floor there is an observation deck accessed by 172 steps. At the foot of the lighthouse there is the Lantern Museum.
Galeon Neptun, Porto Antico
Galeon Neptun is a sailing ship moored at Porto Antico, built as a replica of a galleon for the 1986 French-Tunisian film Pirates, directed by Roman Polanski.
