Livorno: Journey through interesting places

Hello Italy lovers. The next city on your journey around the country is Livorno. The city boasts a large historic port, fresh seafood, excellent cuisine, plenty of monuments and, of course, beautiful beaches.

Livorno is a city and comune in the province of Livorno, Tuscany, Italy. Located on the coast of the Ligurian Sea.

Climate

From May to October is the best time to go to Livorno. Temperatures during this period range from 20°C in May, through 28°C in July and August, to 24°C in October. Spring in Livorno is not the warmest, but if you want to avoid the crowds, you can go in March. The temperature then ranges from 8 to 14°C, and in April from 11 to 17°C. In winter, i.e. from December to February, temperatures range from 6°C to 12°C.

Beaches

The beaches in Livorno are rocky, so you should be well prepared with appropriate footwear. There are also sharp pebbles in the water at the bottom. Rocky coves give an incredible charm to the beautiful behavior of the sun. The Spiaggia Libera beach in Livorno presents a rather unique appearance that will delight us. Here we will find an area with a sandy beach where we can relax and sunbathe.

La Venezia District

You must visit La Venezia District. The name is not accidental here, because this district actually resembles Venice. There are plenty of canals on which you can ride a gondola, as well as bridges and characteristic tenement houses. It would be wonderful to go on a romantic gondola cruise at sunset.

Livorno promenade

When you want to have some fun, take a walk or go shopping, it is worth spending time on Terrazza Mascagni, a promenade stretching along the waterfront. Beautiful views and the sound of the sea create a wonderful maritime atmosphere for tourists. The Livorno Aquarium is located on the promenade. Families with children will be delighted with the sea creatures presented in the oceanarium. And it’s worth going on the Mercato Centrale, i.e. the central market. Here you will find stalls offering fresh products and local Tuscan products, it is worth trying something new.

Fortresses

Worth visiting are Fortezza Vecchia, an impressive Medici-era fortress, and Fortezza Nuova, a later defensive structure.

Canale dei Navicelli 

Canale dei Navicelli, the canal connecting Livorno to Pisa, is an ideal place for a stroll, its banks lined with picturesque boats and colorful buildings.

Culinary Livorno

Livorno is especially famous for cacciucco, a traditional fish soup that is a symbol of the local cuisine. In addition, fresh seafood is the order of the day here, and of course local Italian wines combined with the dishes will take us on a delicious journey of taste buds.

Events in the city

Livorno is also an important cultural center, hosting festivals and artistic events such as Effetto Venezia, a summer festival that brings Quartiere Venezia to life with music, theater and shows.
