Port of Savona

The port of Savona serves passenger ferries, commercial ferries and cruise ships. The port is located approximately 60 km from the city of Genoa. Port address: Vado Ligure (Savona), Calata Nord – Porto Vado – 17047 Vado Ligure.

It is the fourth cruise port in terms of the number of passengers in Italy – in 2013 it was visited by 1,300,000 people. Adjacent to the historic center of Savona, the port of Savona has been operating since the Middle Ages and has always been crucial to the economy of the regional capital and its hinterland. It is the main ferry terminal with ferry services to Corsica and Sardinia, operated by Corsica Ferries and Saremar.

Bergeggi Beach

Bergeggi Island

Bergeggi Island: The stretch of coast between Bergeggi and Spotorno alternates between small beaches and short headlands and protruding cliffs in which the sea has dug several small caves. In front of it, close to the mainland, is the small island of Bergeggi, a suggestive cone of limestone rock reaching 53 meters high. The island and the rocky coast opposite it have been part of the Bergeggi Regional Nature Reserve since 1985. The island is rocky and only partially covered with Mediterranean vegetation. The most interesting plant species include Campanula sabatia, found only in western Liguria, and spurge (Euphorbia dendroides).

Much historical and archaeological evidence has been preserved on the island of Bergeggi. At its top there are ruins of military and religious buildings from various eras. The oldest buildings were probably built in the late Roman period. You really want to come here and visit the island, it’s lovely.

If you plan to arrive on weekends, don’t hesitate to arrive early to have a better chance of finding a parking space when it gets busy.

Toirano Caves

The Toirano caves complex is one of the major tourist attractions in Liguria and is made up of the natural caves of Basura and S. Lucia Inferiore. The Basura Cave – Witch Cave –, discovered in 1950, is characterized by the presence of important archaeological findings.

Priamar Fortress

The Fortress of Priamar (Italian: Fortezza del Priamar) is a fortress occupying the hill of the same name above the port of Savona. The fortress was built in 1542 by the Republic of Genoa on a promontory where it was the nucleus of Savona in the Middle Ages. However, traces of the pre-Romanesque, Roman and Byzantine presence at the site were excavated in the past centuries and are now presented in the Archaeological Museum of Savona.

The Tower – Torre Leon Pancaldo

Torre Leon Pancaldo or Torre della Quarda, commonly called “Torretta”, is a medieval tower located in the port of Savona, at the entrance to the central Via Paleocapa, and is considered a symbol of the city. The tower, like the square on which it stands, is today dedicated to Leon Pancaldo, a navigator from Savona who accompanied Ferdinand Magelan on his first circumnavigation of the world.

Villa Zanelli

Villa Zanelli is a historical building located in Savona, Liguria, Italy. The building is an example of the Liberty style of residential architecture (a variant of Art Nouveau most commonly found in Italy), and was completed in 1907 for the Zanelli family.

Dell Assunta Cathedral

The Cathedral of Savona (Italian: Duomo di Savona, Cattedrale dell’Assunta) is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Savona, Liguria, Italy, dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Formerly the episcopal seat of the Diocese of Savona, since 1986 it has been the seat of the Bishops of Savona-Nola.


The cathedral church of Santa Maria Assunta houses a collection of cultural objects of special ecclesiastical importance. You can see significant examples of jewelry from the 13th to 15th centuries. Among the tables you can see the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary by Lodovico Brei and the Adoration of the Shepherds by Master Hoogstraltern (16th century).

Savona Ceramics Museum

The new Ceramics Museum is a important part of the history of Savona and Albissola. Set up with great attention to detail, a visit to Musa (Museum of Ceramics) is a journey into the building of the Monte di Pietà, which has been skilfully restored, bringing to light frescoes, testimonies and inscriptions from the early Middle Ages.

You will find yourself surrounded by the Baroque style that characterises the entire palace and represents a felicitous encounter between painting and ceramics, in which mythological, literary and biblical episodes are recounted in every single element.

Civic Art gallery of Savona

Palazzo Gavotti is located in the historic center of Savona and is the seat of the Civic Art Gallery of the city. The palace was built during the seventeenth century on medieval pre-existing structures. The Pinacoteca was founded in 2003 within the 22 exhibition halls of the building. The collection on display comes from the collection in the Milena Milani Foundation and the Ceramics Museum.

In particular, the collection consists of paintings from the Ligurian, Genoese, Savona, Sienese and Lombard schools of the periods between the fourteenth and nineteenth centuries. The exhibition continues with the works of the twentieth century owned by the De Mari Foundation that tell the artists significant for the city, such as: Jorn, Lam, Farfa, Scanavino and Fabbri. The works of Picasso, Fontana, Magritte, Mirò, Capogrossi.
