Lake Czorsztyńskie was created as a result of the construction of a dam on the River Dunajec in 1994. This dam, known as the Czorsztyn Dam, was intended to control water levels in the river and to harness its energy potential.
One of the tragic consequences of the dam’s construction was the sinking of the historic village of Czorsztyn. This village, which had existed since the Middle Ages, was an important commercial and cultural centre.
