Queensferry (also South Queensferry, Gael. Port na Banrighinn) is a town in eastern Scotland, in the council area of Edinburgh, historically in West Lothian, situated on the southern shore of the Firth of Forth (North Sea), opposite the town of North Queensferry, about 15 km (9.3 mi) west of Edinburgh. In 2011, it had a population of 9,026.
- The city is situated on the narrowing of the Firth of Forth, which extends several dozen kilometres into the mainland, posing a significant obstacle to travellers between north-eastern and south-eastern Scotland. Since at least 1070, this place has been the southern ferry port leading to the opposite shore of the bay. The opening of the ferry is attributed to Queen Margaret of Scotland, wife of Malcolm III, who, after founding Dunfermline Abbey (on the northern shore of the bay), paid for the transport of pilgrims travelling there. Ferries crossed the bay at this point continuously until the 20th century. In the 1950s, it was the busiest ferry crossing in Scotland, with annual passenger numbers of 1.5 million, cars 600,000 and trucks 200,000. In 1890, the Forth Bridge connected the two shores of the bay, followed by the Forth Road Bridge in 1964. When the Forth Road Bridge opened, the ferry service was closed. Another road bridge, the Queensferry Crossing, opened in 2017. Queensferry used to be a port, serving trade with continental Europe in the 17th century. Today, the town is a satellite town of Edinburgh. Local landmarks include St. Mary’s Church, which dates back to 1441 and is the oldest surviving building in the city, the Black Castle, which dates back to 1626, and the 17th century Tolbooth.
