The Isle of Skye is known for its rugged landscapes, medieval castles, picturesque fishing villages, history and unique scenery. Skye is connected to the north-west coast of Scotland by both the Skye Bridge and the Malaig–Armadale ferry, and is the largest island in the Inner Hebrides in Scotland. Dunvegan
Dunvegan is a vibrant village on the island and is a focal point for both locals and visitors to the area. It’s hard to believe that Dunvegan was once a port and stopping point for steamers from the Outer Hebrides. The last steamships left in the 1950s. Loch Dunvegan now provides a safe anchorage for yachts and several fishing vessels, which still use the pier half a mile north of the village.
Dunvegan Castle is the oldest continuously inhabited castle in Scotland and has been the ancestral home of Clan MacLeod for 800 years. The castle has preserved an important historical collection and is a famous tourist attraction.
The Old Man of Storr
The massive peak of the Old Man of Storr deserves its place as one of the most spectacular landscapes in Scotland. This rock formation is 48 meters high and is located on the north-eastern part of the Isle of Skye. It is part of the larger Trotternish Ridge rock range, which was formed by landslides in prehistoric times. This unusual formation attracts crowds of tourists from all over the world.
Portree
The town of Portree, situated on the east side of Skye overlooking a sheltered bay, is the capital of the island.Portree has a harbor surrounded by wonderful cliffs with a pier. Attractions in the city include the former Aros Centre, now the Isle of Skye Candle Co. Visitor Center which celebrates the island’s Gaelic heritage.The village hosts numerous annual events, such as the Portree Show, the Isle of Skye half marathon and the Islands largest event the Skye Highland Games drawing visitors and locals alike.
This small town offers plenty to do, with local walks nearby and plenty of places to spend time outdoors, eat out, drink and shop. You can even watch a movie or a show at the local theater in the Aros Center.
St Kilda
St Kilda is a UNESCO World Heritage Site National Nature Reserve, home to the world’s largest colony of boobies and fulmars.Please note that St Kilda is a protected environment and cannot accommodate large numbers of visitors. St Kilda can only be reached by boat, but access to the island is strictly controlled.
Armadale Castle
Armadale Castle is one of the top places to visit on the Isle of Skye. Visit the castle ruins and discover over 1,500 years of history at the ancestral home and lands of Clan Donald.The Gulf Stream creates a mild climate, making the 20,000 acres of land and gardens on the estate a floral paradise to explore.
