Lulea: Beautiful Coast Of Northern Sweden

Lulea, located in the northern part of Sweden, attracts tourists with its winter atmosphere and winter sports. The picturesque Luleå Archipelago consists of over 1,300 islands, which are an ideal place for sailing and kayaking in the summer, and dog sledding trips or ice fishing in the winter.

Location

Luleå is a small town on the coast of northern Sweden and the capital of Norrbotten County. Located on the Gulf of Bothnia.

Gammelstad

The church town in Gammelstad is a very interesting wooden landscape, over 400 years old and consists of 404 church houses, six stables and an annex. The ecclesiastical town extends around a large medieval church. The cottages of an ecclesiastical town are small, low buildings, most of which contain only one or two rooms.

A few houses that are two stories high have more rooms, but most have only one story. There was once a total of 71 church towns in Sweden, today only 16 remain and most of them are ruins of what they once were. Gammelstad is Sweden’s largest and best-preserved church town with 404 houses and 552 chambers.

Ormberget – ski resort

During the winter, there are well-prepared ski trails, a biathlon facility and downhill skiing on Ormbergsbacken. There is also a sledding hill next to the slalom slope. In the summer, there are jogging tracks for running, bike paths for mountain bikes and a multi-purpose track for parasport and roller skiing.

Kulturens hus has concert halls, excellent conference rooms, a municipal library, an art gallery, a tourist office, a restaurant and a café. Several hundred events and concerts are organized every year. In addition to its art offerings, Kulturens Hus features an inviting café.

Lulea Cathedral

Luleå Cathedral serves the Diocese of Luleå and the local Church of Sweden parish. It was consecrated in 1893. The church was originally named Oscar Fredrik Church (Oscar Fredriks kyrka), after the King Oscar (Fredrik) II. It became cathedral when the Diocese of Luleå was formed in 1904.

Spanning 54 metres in length and 35 metres in width, the cross-shaped cathedral features a towering spire exceeding 60 metres in height.

Norrbottens Järnvägsmuseum – Norrbotten Railway Museum

The Norrbotten Railway Museum is one of the largest railway museums in Sweden, situated in a picturesque setting in the old industrial district of Karlsvik in Lulea. The main purpose of the museum is to protect and display objects related to Malmbanan, but it also houses vehicles, buildings and other objects taken from various places in Norrland. One of the ideas behind the acquisitions was the ability to show entire lines of development.

The museum and the association have approximately 140 vehicles, most of which can be displayed to visitors. There are 10 different buildings on the museum grounds, including a large, newly built exhibition hall with 4 70 m long tracks, a station from Kos and a switchgear brought from Svartön in Luleå. In summer, museum trains run according to a timetable on the Gammelstad-Karlsvikshytan line.

Norrbottensteatern

The Norrbotten Theater presents a diverse repertoire, covering different genres and different types of content, for children, teenagers and adults, which is played on a tour of the 14 municipalities of Norrbotten and in the theater in Luleå.
