Citadel of Alessandria


- The Cittadella of Alessandria is a star fort and citadel that was built in the 18th century by the Kingdom of Sardinia; today it is one of the best preserved fortifications of that era. The connection of the two banks of the Tanaro River has always had a history full of extreme events, and over the centuries it has been of decisive importance for the region due to its strategic function as a link between the city, first the Bergoglio district, later the Military Citadel, and the communication routes with Asti, Casale and Monferrato. Over the centuries, the bridge was demolished and rebuilt at least four times. The last demolition took place in 2009 and work on the new bridge, designed by Richard Meier, took four years, from 2012 to 2016.
