Even though the capital of Austria is very popular, it is also worth visiting Graz. There are many wonderful monuments and interesting museums to visit here. It is a perfect combination of tradition and history with modernity. The best place to start exploring the city is the Schlossberg hill towering over the city, 260 steps or the Schlossberg funicular lead from the old town to the popular viewing hill in Graz. The clock tower, a landmark of the city, observes the beautiful city from there.

Location

Graz is a located in Austria, in the south-eastern part of the country. It is the second most important and largest Austrian city (after Vienna). The city lies on the Mura River and is surrounded by green areas, mountains (Styrian Alps) and vineyards.

Schlossberg Hill

Schlossbergplatz, situated in the heart of Graz is a Castle Hill. This towering natural landmark once held an imposing fortress known for never being conquered by enemy forces. As you wander through this picturesque square, you’re immediately drawn into the captivating aura of its past while also appreciating its contemporary appeal.

Uhrturm

Due to the French conflict, the castle was destroyed and only the castle survived tower – called the “clock tower” or Uhrturm Today, this iconic symbol rises high above Graz, offering panoramic views of the red rooftops below, and serves as a testament to the country’s history. Many events take place in the surrounding square throughout the year, including concerts, festivals and fairs.

Murinsel in Graz

Murinsel Graz was opened on the occasion of the Year of the Capital of Culture in 2003. What is certain is that it connects the river with the city and is a great place to drink coffee or a cocktail. It is something like a modern artificial island with a cafe, a cinema and impressive night lighting.

Kunsthaus Graz

Located in the historical center of Graz and overlooking the river Mur, the Kunsthaus is housed in an iconic building, famous for its pillow shape, imposing appearance, and for its peculiar blue-colored external skin – Art gallery: can be used as a gigantic multimedia device.The Kunsthaus Graz is also one of the most lively art centers in Austria and regularly accommodates major exhibitions presenting works by international and Austrian contemporary artists, architects, and designers.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Museum

The actor was born in the tiny, foothill town of Thal, a few kilometers from Graz. The Arnold Schwarzenegger Museum is located in a one-story house with yellow-painted walls. Here, in the middle of summer, on July 30, 1947, the future Terminator and Governor of California was born. On the walls there is a collection of photos of the actor from three stages of his life – a young Austrian bodybuilding champion, a Hollywood actor and an American politician – the governor of California.

But the Actor’s most famous films are the Terminator series. And probably the characters from this film are the biggest attraction of the museum. One of the rooms houses memorabilia from Governor Schwarzenegger. There is a massive desk under the window, and in front of it a wax governor speaking against the background of an American flag. In the garden of the house-museum we will also see film characters, but not related to Arnold Swarzenegg. These are several-meter-high steel figures from Japanese cartoons.

Castle Eggenberg

Eggenberg Castle in Graz is one of the most important cultural monuments in Austria and was built in the 17th century. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and impresses with its architecture and extensive gardens.

Graz City Hall

Its prominent Old Town location makes Graz City Hall a popular stop on Graz walking tours. With a smart exterior that serves as a photogenic backdrop in the main square, the site often features on photography tours, too.

New Synagogue of Graz

The New Graz Synagogue for a Jewish congregation and synagogue, located at David-Herzog-Place, on the right bank of the Mur River in the Gries district, in the city of Graz, Austria. The synagogue served Jews from Graz, Styria, Carinthia and the southern part of Burgenland.

Styrian Armoury

The Graz Armory (Landeszeughaus) is the world’s largest historical armory and attracts tourists from all over the world. It holds approximately 32,000 pieces of weapons, tools, combat and parade armor. The Landeszeughaus museum opened in the late 1800’s and consists of 4 floors of weapons and armor from the 15th to the 18th century.

Mausoleum of Emperor Ferdinand II

The burial-place of Emperor Ferdinand II in Graz is a combination of a mausoleum (the dome on the right side in the pic) and a church named Katharinenkirche. The construction of the building took several decades and was finished by the Baroque architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach.

Graz Herz-Jesu-Kirche

Herz-Jesu-Kirche is the largest church in Graz, Austria. It was designed down to the smallest detail by architect Georg Hauberrisser and built between 1881 and 1887. The church was designed in the neo-Gothic style, with a large, high nave and a sub-church.

Graz Opera

The Graz Opera (German: Oper Graz) is both a theater and an opera company based in Graz. The opera house orchestra also performs concerts such as the Graz Philharmonic Orchestra (Grazer Philharmonisches Orchester).

Glockenspiel Graz

The Graz bells are a tourist attraction in Graz. The Carillon was created in 1903-1905 as a gift to the city from the spirits producer Gottfried Simon Maurer. Three times a day (11:00, 15:00 and 18:00) a charming girl and a warm-hearted boy in colorful costumes hang around the carillon square under the gable of the house. The 24 bells of this fun toy ring with three different melodies.

A delightful and romantic spectacle that is second to none. With a spring in their step and a smile on their faces, you can see the audience moving on as the last note fades away. New tunes can be heard five times a year. Alpine songs and yodeling are intertwined with Christmas carols and pleasant melodies by contemporary composers.
