Cuisine, accommodation, transport, weather in Malta

Malta, the smallest country in the European Union, is popular with tourists. It’s no wonder – it’s one of the best holiday destinations, even in the off-season. This small country is, however, incredibly diverse and full of attractions, so plan your stay before your departure.

Maltese cuisine, like Malta itself, is a blend of influences from around the world. Fish and seafood dishes are popular, as is the case elsewhere in the Mediterranean, but there are also many local dishes. What’s worth trying during your stay in Malta?

Fennec – rabbit. Considered a symbol of Maltese cuisine, it is prepared in a variety of ways.

Bragioli – another meat dish, but based on beef served in rolls.

Aljotta – a slightly creamy fish soup. Full of flavor and aroma, featuring not only fish but also seafood.

Pastizzi – a very popular snack consisting of puff-like pastry. Most often savory, filled with pea paste or ricotta cheese.

Ftira – a type of Maltese bread. Often served as a tuna sandwich. For us, it was one of the most delicious things we tried in Malta. Kinnie – a carbonated orange-based drink with a distinctive bittersweet flavor.

Local alcohol – the popular Cisk beer is average, but we were pleasantly surprised by the Maltese wines.

Transport in Malta.

Malta has a very well-developed bus network that connects numerous towns and attractions. However, they have their drawbacks. Alternatives include the rather expensive Uber or, of course, renting a car, scooter, or quad. If you want to visit other islands, you can do so with an organized tour or on your own – using local ferries. We recommend taking a tour to Comino, and a self-guided tour to Gozo.

Public Transport.

The number of bus lines in Malta and Gozo is impressive, as is the number of stops. However, this has its drawbacks – most lines don’t take the shortest possible route from point A to B; they often meander between towns or different city districts, dramatically increasing travel times. A route that would easily take 20 minutes by car can take up to an hour by bus. Google Maps is good at keeping up-to-date with current timetables, so it’s easiest to use this app to find connections.

Malta Weather. The best weather in Malta is, of course, in summer, when there’s almost no rain and the skies are cloudless. Temperatures can be very high then, so traveling in April, May, and September is also a good idea. It’s warm, but not scorching, and there’s still little rain. The closer we get to winter, the greater the chance of precipitation.
