Decin is a city in the north-west of the Czech Republic, which is a great place to spend your summer or winter break. Děčín offers many tourist attractions and interesting places to visit. Decin Castle
Majestically rising above the Elbe River, Děčín Castle is an impressive monument that delights tourists with its rich history, impressive architecture and extensive gardens. The castle, located in northern Bohemia, in the picturesque town of Děčín, is a must-see for lovers of history, art and beautiful views. The Děčín castle is one of the oldest monumental structures in the Czech Republic. In the 10th century, there was a wooden stronghold on the site of today’s castle.
Rose Garden (Růžová zahrada) – Castle Decin
The Rose Garden (Růžová zahrada) is part of the Děčín Castle and is the most popular attraction after the castle. This garden was founded in the 17th century and was once the largest collection of roses in the entire Habsburg Monarchy. Garden It served as a representative garden where guests could admire sculptures resembling classical vases and columns. The best time to visit the Rose Garden is, of course, the summer season, when all the roses growing in the garden bloom beautifully.
Viewpoint in Rose Garden
At the end of the garden you will find a richly decorated stone arch with two sculptures placed on its top. These sculptures depict Roman gladiators fighting each other. To get to the viewpoint, you will have to climb several dozen wide stairs. From the vantage point in the rose garden of Decin Castle there is a beautiful panorama of the town of Děčín. There is also a great view of the surrounding mountain peaks, many of which have observation towers on them.
Masaryk Square
The bourgeois houses on Masaryk Square are mostly built in the Nordic Renaissance style. They are decorated with numerous portals, which were intended to reflect the wealth of the townspeople living there. In the past, around Masaryk Square in Decin, you could admire several fountains from the 14th century, including one that was built in 1509. To this day, only one Art Nouveau fountain by Rudolf Weyr from 1907 has survived here.
A walk along the banks of the Elbe
Another attraction of Decina is a walk along the Smetanovo promenade along the banks of the Elbe. This promenade will take you right next to the river through several interesting places: to the Řetězová lávka chain bridge or to the Mariánské louce city park. Walking along the Smetanovo promenade, you will have the opportunity to admire beautiful views of Decin. It is worth visiting especially in the evening when the buildings on the opposite bank of the Elbe are illuminated.
Rock town of Tisa
This rock town is unique both in terms of its size and the diversity of its rock formations. The Tisá Walls form a labyrinth of sandstone cliffs, with rock needles rising up to 70 metres high.
Bohemian Switzerland National Park – Pravčická Brama
Bohemian Switzerland is just a 2-hour drive from Prague. Perfect for a day trip or several days. The two painters fell in love with the beauty of this park, which reminded them of the stunning nature of Switzerland. That’s why the park is called Bohemian Switzerland. Pravčická Gate is the largest natural rock bridge in Europe and a symbol of Bohemian Switzerland. This monumental rock formation is 16 meters high and has a span of 26.5 meters, making it an extremely impressive place. The views from the Gate are stunning – they stretch over the picturesque valleys and forests of the national park.
Děčínský Sněžník
Děčínský Sněžník is located about 7 km west of Děčín and is the highest peak of the Elbe Sandstones. Although there are more table mountains on the Saxon side, none of them reach its height. The top of the mountain is formed by a plateau with a size of approximately 1600 × 600 m, which slopes slightly towards the Czech-German border. Near its southern edge is the highest point with an altitude of 724 m. About 400 m northeast of it stands a stone lookout tower from the middle of the 19th century.
