Gyula, a city with history and traditions.

Gyula (Romanian: Jula, German: Julau, Serbian: Ðula) is a city in southeastern Hungary, in Békés county, on the Great Hungarian Plain, on the White Keresh river, near the border with Romania. It has 31,928 inhabitants (January 2011).

  • Castle. This is one of the most important fortresses in Hungary. The castle, built in the 15th century in the Gothic style of bricks, has survived almost intact to this day. Currently, the castle walls are filled with exhibitions of the Castle Museum. It is also a place of many artistic and cultural events. In the summer season, theatrical performances and knight tournaments are held here.
  • The birthplace of Ferenc Erkel. Erkel is called the father of Hungarian opera. He composed the music for the Hungarian national anthem. He was born in Gyula in 1810. There is a museum dedicated to him in the city, where you can see an exhibition and listen to the music he composed.
  • Buildings. Gyula is dominated by classicist buildings. The city was saved from communist revolutions in architecture supposedly because it was considered too… bourgeois. Gyula lost its status as the capital of the province during the Soviet domination. Probably to its own benefit.
  • Thermal springs. They were discovered in the 1930s. In 1968, they were recognized as medicinal. The city has thermal pools and a water park offering attractions for adults and children.
  • Százéves słodászda. At almost two hundred years old, this confectionery is the second oldest in Hungary. It has had many owners over the years, but the atmosphere inside is still the same.
  • Gyulai kolbász, or sausage from Gyula. It is made from high-quality pork and has a spicy flavor typical of Hungarian sausages.
